ZPL Designer is a macOS application developed by ROSE Development for designing and printing labels for printers that use the ZPL II language. This Privacy Statement explains how information is handled when you use ZPL Designer or contact us about the app. It applies to the Mac App Store edition and to the edition sold directly on rosedev.nl.
1. Who we are
ROSE Development is the controller for personal data that you voluntarily provide to us in connection with ZPL Designer.
ROSE Development Dirk Altalaan 8 8881 EV Terschelling-West The Netherlands Chamber of Commerce (KvK): 01060354 Email: info@rosedev.nl Telephone: +31 (0)6 53182418
2. Information handled by the app
ZPL Designer does not require an account and does not collect, transmit, sell, rent, or share personal data with ROSE Development or third parties. The app contains no advertising, tracking, analytics, telemetry, crash reporting, or third-party data-collection SDKs, and it makes no connections to the internet. Designing, previewing, generating ZPL, and exporting all happen locally on your Mac.
The app handles the following information only on your device and on printers you choose:
Designs and files. Label designs (.zpldesign), ZPL files (.zpl, .prn), pictures, databases (CSV, TSV, and text files), and exported PNG and PDF files remain on your Mac in locations you choose. ZPL Designer opens files and folders only when you select them through standard macOS file panels, drag and drop, or normal document operations. When a design links to a picture or database, the app remembers where that file is, so the design can open it again; in the Mac App Store edition this is done with a macOS security-scoped bookmark.
Label content and printing. Labels can contain information you add yourself, such as names, addresses, order numbers, or values from a database. When you print, this content is sent only to the printer you selected: a network printer over your local network (TCP port 9100), a printer connected to your Mac through the macOS printing system (CUPS) on your own Mac, or a regular printer through the macOS print dialog. ZPL Designer also asks network printers for their status, such as paused, head open, media out, or the label length they are set to. Label content and printer status are never sent to ROSE Development.
Local network access. On macOS 15 and later, macOS asks whether ZPL Designer may use your local network. The app uses this access only to connect to printers at the addresses you enter. It does not scan or browse your network.
Printers and preferences. Your printer list (names, network addresses or queue names, resolution, and print position corrections), the default printer, default settings for new labels, your GS1 company prefix, font choices, grid and guide settings, bookmarks to pictures and databases linked to your designs, and window layout are stored locally in macOS preferences. The last printed value of a counter is saved in the design itself.
Documents and versions. macOS may keep autosaved versions of open documents as part of its standard document handling. These stay on your Mac.
Clipboard data. If you copy or paste objects or ZPL code, that data is placed on or read from the macOS clipboard at your request.
Licensing (rosedev.nl edition only). A license bought directly from ROSE Development contains the licensee name, email address, license code, and validity details supplied during purchase. During activation, ZPL Designer binds the license to your Mac locally and stores it in a ROSE folder inside Application Support. You are never asked for a hardware identifier, and the app does not send the license, the hardware identifier, or any other information to ROSE Development. The Mac App Store edition contains no license check.
You control these files and settings through macOS and the app. Deleting the app does not automatically delete designs, ZPL files, or exports that you saved elsewhere.
3. Support and other voluntary contact
If you contact ROSE Development for support, feedback, or another enquiry, we may receive the information you choose to provide, such as your name, email address, message, a description of the problem, and attachments such as a design, a ZPL file, or a photo of a printed label. Please leave out personal data of other people that is not needed to answer your question.
We use this information only to:
respond to and manage your request;
diagnose a problem you reported;
improve the app based on your feedback; or
establish, exercise, or defend legal claims when necessary.
Depending on the circumstances, the legal basis is taking steps at your request or performing a contract, our legitimate interest in providing support and improving ZPL Designer, compliance with a legal obligation, or your consent where required.
Support information is retained only for as long as reasonably necessary for these purposes and any applicable legal, accounting, or dispute-resolution requirements. It is then deleted or anonymised.
We do not sell support information. It may be processed by service providers that host our website or email on our behalf, under appropriate contractual and security obligations. We may also disclose information where required by law or where necessary to protect legal rights. If personal data is transferred outside the European Economic Area, we use a legally recognised transfer mechanism where required.
4. Purchases
If you buy ZPL Designer on the Mac App Store, Apple processes the purchase under its own terms and privacy policy; ROSE Development does not receive your payment details. If you buy a license directly from ROSE Development, we process the details needed to deliver and administer your license and to meet our accounting obligations, such as your name, email address, company details, and order information. The privacy statement of the rosedev.nl website describes how order information is handled.
5. Apple and external services
ZPL Designer can open your default browser or email application when you choose a website, support, or contact link. Your use of those services is governed by their own privacy terms.
Apple may independently process information related to App Store downloads, purchases, software updates, and any diagnostics or analytics you choose to share through macOS. ZPL Designer itself does not transmit that information to ROSE Development. Apple handles it under Apple's own privacy policy and terms.
6. Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights concerning personal data held by ROSE Development, including the right to request access, correction, deletion, restriction, portability, or an objection to certain processing, and the right to withdraw consent where processing relies on consent.
To exercise a right, email info@rosedev.nl. We may need to verify your identity before completing a request. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens) or your local supervisory authority.
Because your designs, label content, and printer settings stay on your Mac and your printers and are not received by ROSE Development, requests concerning that information should be handled directly on your device.
7. Children's privacy
ZPL Designer is not directed specifically at children and does not knowingly collect personal data from children through the app.
8. Security
The Mac App Store edition of ZPL Designer uses the macOS App Sandbox, so it can only reach files you select. The app itself connects only to the printers you add and to the printing system on your Mac. Label data is sent to network printers the way those printers accept it: unencrypted, over raw TCP on port 9100, as with other label software. Use network printers on a network you trust. We also apply reasonable technical and organisational safeguards to personal data that you voluntarily send to us. No method of storage or communication is completely secure, however.
9. Changes to this statement
We may update this Privacy Statement when ZPL Designer or applicable requirements change. The current version is published at https://rosedev.nl/apps/zpl-designer/privacy. Material changes will be identified by an updated date at the top of this statement.
10. Contact
Questions about this Privacy Statement or ZPL Designer's privacy practices can be sent to info@rosedev.nl.
